What I am up to
I finally published my Demonschool retrospective. It is without a doubt the most I have ever struggled writing something. Last update I suggested that I “finished” it and that it needed “some” editing. How young and naive I was. Super glad I got there in the end. The first paragraph is still more negative than I would like, but I think it does a good job of capturing my first impression.
While on vacation I also had the time to write about some odd JavaScript functions from the Netscape era and ended up skimming through an old book from those days. It’s older than me, which is very strange to think about. Hope I didn’t make anyone else feel old because of that remark.
The Terminator: Resistance retrospective is still next in line, and then I am finally caught up on the game retrospective side of things. I have some ideas for non-gaming-related posts. The most prominent one is exploring the feeling that I described when I shared the JavaScript post on Bluesky. There is also an AI-safety post that has been bouncing around in my head for a while. It’s about Anthropic’s issues with the Department of War. I wanted to joke about the timeliness of that, but actually there has been a recent development in the court case in DC. I guess we will see where my whims lead me next.
Games
That Baldur’s Gate 3 honor mode co-op run is coming to an end. Haven’t wiped yet, despite both my and my friend’s best efforts. Probably not going to write about that. As much fun as BG3 can be, I am looking forward to being done with it. Act 3 really does overstay its welcome.
About 10 hours into Control and it’s been good. I love the world and presentation … and Jesse, she is awesome. Already collected some thoughts for an eventual retrospective. If you can believe it, I didn’t do that for the other games. Probably didn’t make writing the posts any easier.
However, Control is on hold because the newest Wadjet Eye game came out: Nighthawks. It is so hecking good. I have spent 23 hours in it so far in just two days. The game wasn’t on my radar until about a week before release. Lucky coincidence that I have some time off work right now. What a great way to spend most of it.
On my Old School RuneScape ironman gained a full 10k Runecraft experience. Yeah, you read that right: 10,000. A number with punctuation. My membership still lasts for 110 days — surely that should be enough to max at the current pace.
Reading
Did not collect enough to have a themed set of posts to recommend like last time. Or well, I guess they are themed, but the theme is “posts that involve the company Apple in some way.” Not exactly thrilling as a collection, but interesting posts nonetheless.
“I said no and Apple said yes” by David Bushell which is an infuriating tale about our current moment in tech, and how dark patterns are still very much alive.
“Fifteen years later, the Apple Cards origin story” by Lex Friedman which is an interesting story about the mountains that Apple moved to get a product built for Steve Jobs. I hadn’t heard about Apple Cards before, which is part of the fun of that story.
